February 24th - 25th

Monday:

It was a very quiet for us today. I caught a cold and didn’t feel like doing anything. Cordell, Barb and Jim took some time to go to the store and pick up some more groceries. Jim grilled hamburgers on the electric grill for dinner.

This was my daughter-in-law, Corinne’s 50th birthday. We had a nice video phone call with her and found out she has been celebrating for several days.
We watched the University of Maryland basketball game and were disappointed when despite our best cheering efforts, they were beaten by Syracuse University.
I went to bed early while the others stayed up and spent some time trying to solve geocache puzzles.

Tuesday:
I was happy when I woke up this morning to discover that my cold was getting better. The gang had finally solved a geocache puzzle they had been working on for a few days and they were anxious to go and look for it.
This was a homemade cache placed by our local friend who most always makes unique containers and places them in ways that challenge us. It did take a few minutes searching until I was the first one to spot something different which turned out to be the hiding place.

Next, we went to Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve where we planned to look for an earth cache. It required us to find answers along the 1.2 mile boardwalk to certain questions.

A "slough" (pronounced "slew") is a geographical feature commonly found in southern Florida. It is a natural depression that forms a drainage-way for run off from the heavy rainfall. The Six Mile Slough drains a watershed of 33 square miles. The slough itself is 2,500 acres in area and 9 miles long by 1/3 mile wide.

We enjoyed walking the boardwalk in the 81° temperature. We all agreed that only God could design such a perfect system like this slough. We saw the expected turtles, fish, egrets, herons, an alligator, but were surprised to see a cottonmouth moccasin and a wild pig.

We spent so much time at the preserve that we didn’t stop for lunch until 3:30 p.m. We took Barb and Jim to the Florida Café where we had eaten a few weeks ago. This café has only been open for about three months and the dishes are made on site. We all ordered the spinach quiche which was very delicious.
As a result of our late lunch, we also had a late dinner tonight. We spent a couple hours trying to solve some more puzzle caches, but so far we haven’t been successful.

  1. I hope you were feeling EVEN better today! Turn-around time for a cold seems to be MUCH shorter in Florida than in Maryland! :) We had snow AGAIN this morning -- about 2 inches - but it's almost gone now. Easier to deal with than that 2'' we got in January that stuck around for 3 weeks! Nonetheless - I'll be glad when it stops happening!

I'm so happy you guys are getting to be puzzle kings & queens! Now you can help me solve all the ones I haven't been able to! :D
