Wednesday, February 12th – Thankful for a warm climate.

We woke up this morning and almost felt guilty complaining about the breezy day here while folks at home were preparing for another snowfall.

We had a few errands to run and our first stop was at Zion Lutheran Church where we had attended a service a few weeks ago. We purchased tickets from the church for seats to watch the Grand Parade of Light that is going to take place on Saturday evening. These ticket sales are fundraisers for various organizations.

Then, we drove into old Fort Myers and spent a few hours walking around this delightful town that is nicknamed “The City of Palms”. The scores of royal palm trees that line the 15 mile McGregor Boulevard are 50 to 70 feet tall.

There are beautiful old buildings—commercial and residential and we enjoyed seeing the various styles.

We checked out the area where our parade seats are located and investigated possible places to park our car when we go back on Saturday. The parade is part of the Edison Festival of Light and this is the 76th year the city has celebrated Thomas Edison who spent the last 30 winters of his life here. We saw a statue honoring Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone who were known as fathers of the American industrial twentieth century.

We stopped to find a geocache which was placed near a memorial a dog owner had made in honor of his dog, Lucy. We haven’t been able to obtain any detailed information on Lucy and I wish I knew the circumstances of her heroic deed.

We remained in contact with friends and family in Virginia and Maryland and upon seeing photos of the snow they were receiving, we gave thanks again that we have been blessed to spend this time in a warm climate.
